It all Started with the Egg.
Joseph Buchwald, a native, of Austria, who worked in an official capacity as an egg inspector at that country's border, immigrated to the United States in 1912 and worked as an independent egg candler in Chicago, and later in Petaluma, CA.
The lure of the upcoming Panama-Pacific International Exposition enticed Joseph to San Francisco in 1913. Once there, the ambitious young Austrian rented space at the rear of a grocery store at California and Fillmore streets. From there, he conducted an egg business...briskly driving his horse and buggy to Pier 5 to collect the eggs which arrived from Petaluma on the riverboat, Steamer Gold.
The company evolved in the ensuing years as a major food processor and distributor to the restaurant, baking, and confection trades. Mr. Buchwald's sons, Charles and Leo, came on board with their father's business while still in knickers. They successfully grew and guided the business finally settling in Redwood City, CA from 1970 to 1989. JBS BakeService maintained its' family style ownership when two employees, the Mecozzi brothers, Paul and Jeff, acquired ownership and management in 1989.
President Jeffrey Mecozzi has lead the company since that time and currently operates the business from its Hayward distribution center. Mr. Mecozzi attributes the success of the company to the knowledgeable, dedicated, and trusted staff that continues to provide our industry superior service and expertise.
